Access to Medicine Foundation: Bridging the Health Equity Gap

Innovation in medicine is advancing at an extraordinary pace, with more effective tools available to prevent, manage and treat diseases and health conditions than ever before. Yet, equitable access to medicines and other essential healthcare products is lagging in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where nearly 80% of the world’s population live. In these regions, lifesaving health products such as vaccines, antibiotics, diagnostics and essential medicines, including those critical for women’s reproductive and maternal health, are often out of reach and preventable deaths are all too common.

At the Access to Medicine Foundation, we mobilise healthcare companies to address chronic issues of availability and affordability so that lifesaving products reach the people who need them most. Amid global health challenges, including the rise of drug-resistant infections, increasing rates of heart disease and cancer, and the threat of future pandemics, the need to bridge access gaps is more urgent than ever.

Driving Change Through Our Evidence-Based Research

Creating global health equity cannot be done in isolation; it is a collaborative effort that requires the participation of stakeholders across the public and private sectors. Over the last two decades, the Access to Medicine Foundation has solidified its reputation as a leader in convening powerful players in the global health landscape.

By leveraging our evidence-based research to guide healthcare companies, we ensure their efforts benefit the lives of those most in need, driving real progress in expanding access. Our flagship publication, the Access to Medicine Index, which spans more than 80 diseases and conditions and 113 underserved countries, zeroes in on specific opportunities for the industry to address persistent gaps and captures best practices that can be leveraged by other influential players to drive change. This powerful tool is not just for companies, but also for governments and investors – essential partners in the effort to make global health equity a reality.

Together, We Can Seize Momentum Toward Global Health Equity

While innovation in medicine is surging, basic essential medicines are still out of reach for people living in LMICs. The Foundation is committed to closing these gaps and has already demonstrated stepwise progress in how companies expand access to life-saving products. Through strategic partnerships and funder engagement, the Foundation is expanding its mission-driven work to reach more communities. To continue this impact, we are seeking governments, funders, individuals and investors willing to invest in our evidence-based research that directly influences access and drives systemic change.

Together, we can bridge the health equity gap and ensure lifesaving products reach everyone, everywhere.
